Apatelodidae: American silkworms

A fairly small family of about 250 species, of which 115 are known from Ecuador. The forewings are often rather narrow and falred out towards the tips with a brown or grey ground colour and dark blotches. Some species have with scalloped edges to the wings. The wings are usually held out from the body at rest with the hindwing concealed by the forewing. In the genus Quentalia, the wings are often slightly folded or rolled. The Apatelodidae are covered by volume 15 of Mariposas del Ecuador, where a few species are identified only as 'sp1', 'sp2' etc.

The gallery below shows most of the species that have been recorded at the Lodge. Click on each photo to see an enlarged picture, the species name, and more information.
