The Chocó Bioregion

The Chocó is a narrow zone of wet forest, squeezed between the Andes mountains and the Pacific coast of western Ecuador and Colombia.  It is home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals, many of which are found nowhere else.  BirdLife International recognises the Chocó as having more restricted-range species than any other area in the Americas — there are more endemic birds here than anywhere else in the New World.  Much of the original Chocó forest has been destroyed, particularly in the lowlands, but Tandayapa Bird Lodge offers easy access to some of the remaining sites, covering a range of habitats between 400m and 3400m altitude.

The following fifty-eight Chocó endemics have been recorded on day trips from the Lodge, and those with an asterisk are known from the Lodge property itself. Those in bold (forty species) are restricted-range species. For more details, see the Tandayapa Valley and day trips lists.
