Hermits follow routes through the forest, going from flower to flower and stopping only when they find nectar. They treat feeders in the same way, drinking for a minute or so before continuing their route, so the Tawny-bellied Hermit comes in a few times each day but does not hang around. It usually announces its arrival with its shrill "tseet!" call.
As the only hermit in the Valley, this species is unmistakable with its long decurved bill and flashing elongated white tail feathers. Do beware Brown Violet-ears and Speckled Hummingbirds, which have a superficially hermit-like face pattern (dark ears and a pale moustache), but lack the long bill and tail feathers and the rich tawny colour.
